Abstract

China’s growing economic influence in the Balkans has significantly impacted Serbia’s economic development, political landscape, and relations in the wider Southeast European region. This article explores the multifaceted dynamics of the China-Serbia partnership, focusing on the motivations behind China’s investments, the impact on Serbia’s economy, and the broader geopolitical implications for the Balkans and the European Union (EU). China’s relationship with Serbia goes beyond pure economic cooperation and includes strategic investments in key sectors such as energy, natural resources, and infrastructure. The acquisition of key Serbian assets such as the Železara Smederevo steel plant and the RTB Bor copper mine underscores the structural importance of Chinese investments in shaping Serbia’s national economy. An analysis of the political and diplomatic implications of China’s influence in Serbia reveals a complex web of relations between the two states that dates back to the aftermath of the Kosovo War. The article emphasizes the need for a balanced approach that addresses macroeconomic imbalances and aligns with Serbia’s EU membership aspirations. The article takes a comprehensive and multidimensional approach, covering topics; economic participation, motivations, impacts on the Serbian economy, political consequences, territorial implications, and prospects.
